Tom Davenport is our new data science expert, recently joining us through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with University of Westminster. Here he describes what this means, and what he is going to do for the business.
I recently graduated from Stirling University’s Big Data programme. For my dissertation, I completed an internship with the DC Thomson Media Group, using machine learning to identify whether there were patterns of users that bought from their site, and created a model that showed what structural factors of their email marketing strategy performed well. I am very excited about getting my hands on all sorts of marketing data to practise data science at Mezzo Labs.
First, a word about the KTP… “KTP” is short for Knowledge Transfer Partnership, a co-operation between a company, a university and the government. The aim is to transfer skills from academia to industry, and back again.
It provides an opportunity for the company to create an innovative, new product, and for the university to research something from the world of business. It also provides the Associate (me) with experience of working on a commercial project that is going to have a significant impact on the business. The KTP scheme has been running for 40 years, and has been a spectacular success, generating new jobs and commercial opportunities that have benefitted the UK through lower unemployment and increased economic output.
I have a fantastic opportunity to take data science to new levels in Mezzo Labs. As well as seeing how I can fit data science into what Mezzo Labs already does I hope to be working on a project to develop a secure system that will allow clients to see where customer journey issues are affecting conversion. The challenge of the project will be to do this in real time, and applying machine learning to a data stream in a secure way.
I’m really looking forward to this. Having the responsibility of managing a project that is going to have such an impact on the business is really exciting and I can’t wait to get stuck in!
